TMD/TMJ

The temporomandibular joint, often referred to as TMJ, is located between the ear and the cheekbone. When this joint becomes strained, the result is often facial pain and discomfort. Fortunately, once TMJ symptoms have been diagnosed at our Kansas City, Oklahoma City or Tulsa offices, we can easily provide TMJ treatment.

TMJ Disorder Symptoms

Most patients with TMJ symptoms do not realize they suffer from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). This is often because the symptoms of TMJ disorder could easily be caused by a variety of factors, making it tricky to diagnose. Patients with TMJ disorder typically experience frequent headaches for instance; however, such symptoms may simply be dismissed, without ever determining a cause.

TMJ disorders typically result from a misaligned bite; a head, neck, or jaw injury; or excessive pressure on the jaw muscles or joints. Symptoms of TMJ disorder may include:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Facial pain
  • Ear pain
  • Ringing in the ear
  • Locking of the jaw
  • Change in bite
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw
  • Pain in the neck, shoulder or upper back

If you are suffering from any of these TMJ disorder symptoms, contact our Kansas City, Oklahoma City or Tulsa offices for TMJ treatment today.

TMJ Disorder Treatment

Once a patient has been diagnosed with TMJ disorder, it is time to devise a treatment plan. Many patients suffering from the disorder at our Kansas City, Oklahoma City and Tulsa offices need TMJ treatment that is fairly non-invasive. Such treatment is often carried out using a step-by-step approach. Treatment typically involves muscle-relaxing techniques, or the wearing of a bite plate to help reduce clenching and grinding.

If you are experiencing TMJ symptoms, contact our offices in Kansas City, Oklahoma City or Tulsa to meet with a dentist that has an extensive understanding of TMJ disorders and treatment.
